about

I wrote and recorded the album "Art Star and the Ghost" when I was ages 15 and 16. During this period of my life, some of the most incredible and also tragic events occurred. I was struggling with my identity as a transgender girl, and I lost a lot of friends. I had someone close to me who pretended to be my friend but just wanted to hurt me. I joined a performance art troupe and an elf woman became my godmother. My friend of many years died tragically. This album is dedicated to him. I used music as a means of coping, which is why some of the songs are very much from a stream of consciousness.
During this period, I made a music video for the song High-high-higher. One day a classmate of mine said, "hey Dylan, your music video is on the crappymusic reddit - and it's blowing up!" Turned out the deliberately cheesy, shot on VHS video was mistaken for genuine, and turned me into a minor cult star on the internet. I even ended up with a full page spread in NY Times Magazine. Unfortunately, the scrutiny this invited as to my identity was a little too much for me to handle, because i was very young and still figuring things out for myself. To get comments on my videos calling me "Buffalo Bill" and telling me I'm ugly was enough to drive a very depressed and hormonal teenager a bit crazy, so I took the album off of iTunes, but not before I made some incredible friends through my weird, fleeting virality, something I've experienced twice in my life. These friends have proved absolutely valuable and wonderful in my life, and I am so thankful for them. When I started my job at age 18, on the first week one of my coworkers said "Hey, are you Disck?"
Although I retired my performing name, (for now) "Disck" is now the name of my production company, which has produced six feature films that were a blast to make!
This album might not be the best piece of music, but it marks a time in my life when I was consumed by both an overpowering sadness and an incredible magic, and that is why I am reuploading it for the first time in several years for free. If you would like to donate, I ask for no more than a dollar.

This album is dedicated to George Planding, who taught me a lot about the beauty and tragedy of life. I still wear your necklace around my neck, every day.
